Listed below are the beautiful purebred chicken breeds, all of which we have been lovingly raised (and our olive eggers carefully crossbred) right here on the farm for many years. After raising many types of breeds over the years, these are the specific breeds that have become our favorites, We have always chosen breeds that do excellent in Alaska, are incredibly beautiful, the most cold hardy, most productive egg layers, and fastest growing/biggest meat birds. Every year, we select the very best of our flocks to reproduce the best genetic traits of each breed, resulting in beautiful offspring each season for our customers. These are not just any mix of barnyard layers that you can pick up from neighbors who are giving away the chickens they are tired of caring for. These are beautiful, top-of-the-line birds, of the highest quality for those who love raising chickens and want to own a beautiful, diverse flock. Our layers will bring you years of joy and egg production. Nearly all of these are considered rare and/or difficult to find, especially here in Alaska. They are breeds that are known to be amazing chickens for a variety of reasons. They are docile in nature, good free range choices, are healthy, good natured and attentive mothers, and lay a rainbow of beautifully colored eggs....plus they are naturally gorgeous chickens that will be the pride joy of your homestead!
We do not administer any type of vaccinations, antibiotics, pesticides, or chemicals among our flocks, or the chicks we hatch out. They are carefully bred, incubated or naturally brooded, hatched, and hand raised 100% right here on our farm. Ask around, you will find out that other "local" hatcheries in Alaska simply order and ship up chicks for customers from hatcheries in the lower 48. Not us, from start to finish we are 100% Alaskan grown!
We offer chicks, pullets, and when possible, adult hens and roosters. All of our chicks and pullets are sold straight run, which means they are not sexed and can end up being a hen or a rooster.
* Please note, we do also sell an assorted "barnyard mix" of chicks (similar to what you would find in your local feed store, etc.). They are not purebred, but include genetics from our breeds below. They are free range and are not controlled or monitored for breeding, so they are more affordable for folks who are not looking for purebred chickens. You will see a box for them at the bottom of this list, including pricing, etc.
Wyandotte Chickens were developed in New York State and Wisconsin in the late 19th century and come in many colors. The Blue Laced Red Wyandotte is a buff color with blue lacing – an unusual color in chickendom. They are one of our absolute favorites in terms of astounding color patterns.
Wyandottes make a good dual purpose breed. Hens lay around 4-6 light brown eggs each week in season. Wyandottes are known to be cold hardy and many times continue to lay eggs through the winter when other chickens have stopped. Wyandottes are very nice birds and are an excellent family friendly breed.
The color blue does not breed true. The chicks hatched from blue parents can be blue, black, or splash. You will receive Sawmill Creek Organic Farm choice colors when ordering.

The Ameraucana breed of chicken was developed here in the United States in the 1970s. The breed’s most striking features are their slate or black legs and the fact that they lay bright aqua/blue tinted eggs. Ameraucanas always have both beards and muffs. Their pea comb makes them a great bird for colder climates. They have a quiet and calm personality and will be sure to attract attention to your flock. You can expect 4-6 blue eggs per week from these hens.
Ameraucana Chickens are not to be confused with Easter Eggers as they are a pure breed. They are also sometimes confused with Araucanas, which are rumpless and have tufts. Ameraucanas are a rarity of breed.

Marans chickens originated in western France in a town by the same name. Black Copper Marans are primarily known for their dark chocolate brown eggs. Black Copper Marans eggs are the darkest of all the Marans varieties. As with all dark brown egg layers, the eggs are the darkest at the beginning of the laying cycle. The eggs will lighten slightly, then return to darkest color after a period of rest. You can expect 3-5 eggs weekly from the hens.
Black Copper Marans do well on free range, causing less damage through heavy scratching. These fast growers are a good dual purpose breed for the homestead or backyard flock.

Welsummers are a rare breed of chicken with Dutch origins, named after the village of Welsum, Holland. They are coveted for the dark reddish-brown speckled eggs. Welsummers are still considered fairly new to North America, imported in the early 1900s. They adapt well to any environment and are excellent foragers. The roosters of this breed are a beautiful sight, and in fact, the rooster you find on the Kellogg’s Cornflake cereal box is a Welsummer named Cornelius.
The Welsummer egg is especially notable and a favorite for egg baskets. They range in a variety of reddish brown colors from terracotta to mahogany, with varying amounts of brown speckles. No two eggs are alike. You can expect around 3-5 brown speckled eggs weekly.

The Lavender Orpington is another beautiful rare breed! They are another gentle giant! They lay a very light brown/almost pink egg (about 150 per year). They have loose feathering that make them look bigger than they are. Beautiful grayish/lavender coloring really stands out in the flock. Very gentle and friendly birds that make wonderful additions for the home or farm that has children. Hens make good, broody mothers. Originated from England from Mr. Cook who was attempting to create a chicken with feathers that would hide the dust and soot of the industrial era at that time. The fantastic thing is that the Lavender Orpington will breed true and all offspring will have the same beautiful lavender color!

We craft all of our products by hand, using locally sourced spruce and birch, milled right here on our beautiful mountain farm! Owning our own land and sawmill allows us to pass on the savings of lumber directly to our customers! The price of store-bought lumber has exploded over the last year, as has the price of all wooden structures being sold across the nation. Thankfully, we are able to offer lower prices to our customers for starter kits that would otherwise cost thousands of dollars to build and put together with all of the lumber, hardware, birds, and accessories. Our chicken coop designs are based off of years of raising chickens here in Alaska. They are built for affordability, ease and quickness of cleaning, and health & safety of the flock. Not everyone has $3000-$10,000 to spend on a huge, new coop. Our coops are produced with customers in mind who are looking for an alternative that is less expensive, equal in quality and hardiness, and perfect for a backyard flock.
All of our chicken coops are sold as a coop and run together. The total dimensions are 9 feet long x 5 feet wide x 5.5 tall. The coop itself is fully insulated for Alaska's frigid winters and include:
- 1" foam
- Optional interior polyethylene lining with drain, which creates a very easy surface to thoroughly pressure wash, that chickens cannot peck at and eat.
- Covered vents for proper ventilation and air flow
- Nesting box with easy exterior access for gathering eggs and refreshing bedding
- 2 removable perches (roosts)
- 1 light bulb access (ready for your light bulb and extension cord)
- Manual chicken door with latch that leads to the inside of the run
- Chicken ladder from coop to run
- Easy access coop man door for cleaning, etc.
- Coop roof allows light to fill the coop for happy hens, even during winter.
The run portion of our product includes:
- Easy access "man-door" with secure deadbolt lock for ease of cleaning and accessing birds. It is built up off the ground so the snow does not block it in the winter and birds do not run out when you have to go inside to work, etc.
- 2 built-in roosts
- Sturdy roofing that stands up to Alaskan wind and snow, but allows light and warmth to enter the run area for the chickens.
